An easy-reference spell list of all the spells Taako has been seen using in canon, and his go-tos in various situations.

A few quick stat notes:

CANTRIPS (free use, knows 5)

Dancing Lights: (120 ft range, concentration up to 1 minute)
Taako creates four orbs of light that can appear as torches, lanterns, or orbs that hover in the air for the duration. He can also combine the four lights into one glowing vaguely humanoid form of average size. Whichever form he chooses, each light sheds dim light in a 10-foot radius.

Mage Hand: (30ft range)
A spectral, floating hand appears withing range that Taako can control and use to manipulate objects. The hand can't attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds.

Minor Illusion: (30 feet range, up to 1 minute duration)
Taako creates a sound or an image of an object that lasts for up to a minute. The image can't create sound, light, smell or any other sensory effect, nor be bigger than a 5 foot cube. Physical interaction with the object reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.

Prestidigitation: (10 ft range, up to an hour duration)
This spell is a minor magical trick that novice spell-casters use for practice, doing things like creating a harmless sensory or visual effect. He can have three of these effects active at once, including:
• Create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, faint musical notes, or an odd odor.
• Instantaneously light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire.
• Instantaneously clean or soil an object no larger than 1 cubic foot.
• Chill, warm, or flavor up to 1 cubic foot of nonliving material for 1 hour.
• Make a color, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface for 1 hour.
• Create a nonmagical trinket or an illusory image that can fit in his hand and that lasts until the end of his next turn.

Ray of Frost: (60ft range)
A frigid beam of blue-white light streaks toward a creature within 60 feet. The target is slowed and at current level takes a moderate amount of cold damage (3d8).

FIRST LEVEL SPELLS (four slots)


Charm Person: (30 ft, up to an hour)
Taako can pick one person to charm into regarding him as a friendly acquaintance. The effects last one hour, but if Taako or those associated with him do anything directly harmful to the charmed person, the spell is broken. When the spell ends, the person knows they have been charmed. If cast at a higher level, Taako may select one additional creature per level, as long as they are all within range.

Detect Magic: (30 ft, concentration, up to 10 minutes)
He can sense the presence of magic nearby in the form of a faint aura around the source, and determine what type of magic it is. He can see this aura through solid materials up to one foot thick. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends.

Disguise Self: (up to 1 hour)
Taako makes himself take on a different appearance for up to an hour. He can't change his body type, such as changing the number of appendages he has, or altering his height more than one foot taller or shorter. If an item is added, physical interaction with the object will reveal it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.

Magic Missile: (120 ft)
He creates three glowing darts of magical force, and can direct them individually to attack anything he can see. Each dart deals a very low amount of damage. If cast at a higher level, one dart is added for each level higher than 1st.

Shield: (self range only)
An invisible barrier of magical force appears and protects him for one attack.

Sleep: (90 ft, 1 minute)
He can put up to three people to sleep in a 20 foot circle for one minute or until they are hit.

Tasha's Hideous Laughter: (30 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
One person of Taako's choice that he can see within range perceives everything as hilariously funny and falls into fits of incapacitating laughter for the duration. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. The target can break out of the spell with strong concentration, and is easier to break if they take damage during the spell's effect.

Thunderwave: (15 foot cube from self)
A wave of thunderous force sweeps out from Taako, inflicting a moderate amount of damage on anyone or anything in it's path and knocking them back back ten feet. The spell emits a thunderous boom audible from a great distance. When this spell is cast at a higher level, the damage increases for each level higher it is cast.

SECOND LEVEL SPELLS (three slots)


Crown of Madness: (120 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako can compel someone to attack anyone else but themselves. While they are controlled, an illusory crown of twisted, jagged iron appears on their head, and a madness glows in its eyes. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. The target can act normally if he compels it to, until he wishes to take action.

Darkvision: (8 hours)
Upon touching someone willing, they are granted the ability to see in the dark as if it were brightly lit for the duration.

Detect Thoughts: (30 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
For the duration, Taako can read the thoughts of 1 person or creature within range. He can learn the surface thoughts of the creature— what is most on its mind in that moment. If he probes deeper, he can gain insight into reasoning, emotional state, and something that looms large in the creature or person's mind. The target knows that he is probing into its mind, and unless he shifts your attention to another creature’s thoughts, the target can push him out of their mind.

Enlarge/Reduce: (30 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako can double or halve the size of any person or object he can see. If cast on a person or animal, everything it is wearing and carrying changes size with it. If made bigger, the target can deal more damage; if made smaller, less.

Gust of Wind: (60 ft long and 10 ft wide line from self, concentration, up to 1 minute)
A strong gust of wind blasts out from Taako, pushing anyone in its path 15 feet away per 6 seconds unless they can grab hold of something. It also extinguishes unprotected flames and disperses gas or vapor. He can also change it's direction throughout the duration at will. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends.

Knock: (60 ft)
Taako can choose any locked, jammed, or barred object that he can see and cause it to unlock. If the object is locked by magical means, that spell is suppressed for 10 minutes, during which time the target can be opened and shut normally. The spell emits a very loud knocking sound.

Levitate: (60 ft, concentration, up to 10 minutes)
Any single person or object, including himself and weighing up to 500 pounds that Taako can see floats up vertically into the air, and remains suspended there for the duration. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. The target can move only by pushing or pulling
against a fixed object or surface within reach.

Melf's Acid Arrow: (90 ft)
A shimmering green arrow streaks toward a target within range and bursts in a spray of acid, dealing a moderate amount of damage immediately and more in splash range. If cast using a higher level, the attack deals extra damage per spell level.

Rope Trick: (1 hour)
He touches a length of rope that is up to 60 feet long. One end of the rope then rises into the air until the whole rope hangs perpendicular to the ground. At the upper end of the rope, an invisible entrance opens to an extradimensional space that lasts until the spell ends. The extradimensional space can be reached by climbing to the top of the rope, and can hold as many as eight Medium or smaller creatures. The rope can be pulled into the space, making the rope disappear from view outside. Attacks and spells can’t cross through the entrance into or out of the extradimensional space, but those inside can see out of it as if through a 3-foot-by-5-foot window centered on the rope. Anything inside the extradimensional space drops out when the spell ends.

Scorching Ray: (120 ft)
He creates three rays of fire and hurl them at one to three targets. The ray sets the target on fire for several seconds, causing a moderate amount of damage. If the spell is cast at a higher level, an additional ray is added per spell level above 2nd.

Shatter: (60 ft)
A sudden loud ringing noise, painfully intense sounds out, causing pain to anyone who hears it but him. The effects can also damage and shatter non-magical objects. If the spell is cast at a higher level, the damage is increased per higher level cast.


THIRD LEVEL SPELLS (three slots)


Blink: (self only, 1 minute)
Upon casting Blink, Taako disappears from existence and, six seconds later, reappears nearby (within 10 feet). He cannot be seen, heard, smelled, touched, or otherwise perceived, but can see his surroundings in shades of gray within 60 feet until he reappears.

Clairvoyance: (1 mile, concentration, up to 10 minutes)
Taako creates an invisible sensor within range in a familiar location, or in an obvious location that is unfamiliar (like behind a door or around a corner). The sensor remains in place for the duration, and it can’t be attacked or otherwise interacted with. When he casts the spell, he can choose the probe to see or hear, and can use the chosen sense as if he were in its space. He can switch between seeing and hearing at will, but never the two simultaneously. Anyone that can see the sensor (such as a creature benefiting from see invisibility or truesight) sees a luminous, intangible orb about the size of his fist.

Fireball: (150 ft)
A 20 foot wide fireball blasts out of Taako's hands or staff. Anyone in its path catches on fire, taking fairly significant damage until they can extinguish themselves. The fire can ignite flammable objects in the area and can spread around corners. If the spell is cast at a higher level, the damage is increased per higher level cast.

Hunger of Hadar: (150 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako summons unknown, indescribable horrors from a sphere blackness and bitter cold in a 20 foot radius sphere. This void is filled with a cacophony of soft whispers and slurping noises, and seems to absorb all light, warping the very fabric of space. Anyone nearby or within the area longer than six seconds will take minor damage from the chilly coldness of space, as well as as minor damage from acidic, milky white, otherworldly tentacles rubbing against them. Yes, it is as weird as it sounds, and no, he's not sorry about it.

Phantom Steed: (30 ft, up to an hour)
A large, quasi-real, horse-like creature appears on the ground with range. In Taako's case, it is a large, magnificent binicorn who wears a pair of sunglasses and looks rad as hell. His name is Garyl, and the song "Always" by Erasure will play softly in the background on repeat for the duration of his existence. Garyl is totally radical, and can talk in short sentences comprised mostly of 90s cool dude slang, run super fast, and at the end of an hour, he will slowly fade from existence, leaving naught but a faint puff of glittery rainbow smoke and memory of his excellence behind. He has a speed of 100 feet/round and can travel at 10 miles an hour, or 13 at a fast pace.

Water Breathing: (30 ft, 24 hours)
Taako can grant up to 10 willing creatures that he can see within range (including himself) the ability to breathe underwater. Affected creatures also retain their normal mode of respiration.

FOURTH LEVEL SPELLS (three slots)


Arcane Eye: (30 ft, concentration, up to 1 hour)
An invisible magical sensor is created that he can move throughout empty space to send him visual information for up to an hour. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. A solid barrier blocks it's movement, but it can fit through a space as small as 1 inch in diameter.

Banishment: (60 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako sends one creature that he can see within range to another plane of existence. If the target is native to the plane of existence you’re on, you banish the target to a harmless demiplane; if it is not, it is permanently banished to it's home plane instantaneously. While there, the target is incapacitated and remains for the duration of the spell. When the spell ends, it reappears in the space it left. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. If cast at a higher level, Taako can target 1 additional creature per level.

Evard's Black Tentacles: (90 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Squirming, ebony tentacles erupt from the ground in a 20 ft square, hitting people for a moderate amount of damage, and holding them in place. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. Those held can escape through a strong struggle or through fighting the tentacles themselves.

Fabricate: (120 ft; 10 minute casting time, but permanent effects)
Taako can magically convert raw materials into products made from the same material. Living beings and magic items can’t be created or transmuted by this spell, and he also can’t use it to create items that ordinarily require a high degree of craftsmanship, unless he already knows how to craft those items without magic. So he could make a magic sandwich, but can't build a house.

Fire Shield: (self cast only, 10 minute duration)
Thin and wispy flames wreathe Taako's body, providing him with a warm shield or a chill shield, at his choosing. The warm shield grants him resistance to the extreme cold, and the chill shield grants him resistance to fire and extreme heat. In addition, if he is hit while the shield is active, it erupts with flame, causing the attacker either moderate frostbite or burns.

Greater Invisibility: (anything within touch, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako or anyone he touches becomes invisible. Anything the person is wearing or carrying is invisible as long they person is holding or wearing it when the spell is cast. They can still be perceived by other senses, but cannot be seen by the naked eye. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends.

Ice Storm: (300 ft)
A hailstorm rains down from the sky, pelting anyone caught in it with freezing cold hail, inflicting a moderate amount of damage. The hailstones generated by the spell remain on the ground until they melt way or are otherwise destroyed naturally. If the spell is cast at a higher level, the damage is increased a small amount per higher level cast.

Otiluke's Resilient Sphere: (30 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
A sphere of shimmering force encloses a creature or object that Taako can see. Nothing—not physical objects, energy, or other spell effects—can pass through the barrier, in or out, though a creature in the sphere can breathe there. The sphere is weightless and just large enough to contain the creature or object inside. An enclosed creature can use its action to push against the sphere’s walls and thus roll slowly the sphere like a giant, magical hamster ball. Similarly, the ball can be moved by other people. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends.

Phantasmal Killer: (120 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako taps into the nightmares of his opponent and creates an illusory manifestation of its deepest fears, visible only to them. They will become incapacitated with fear and suffer the psychological effects of seeing their greatest nightmare brought to life, but it cannot deal any physical damage unless the target does it to themselves. If the target of the spell can convince themselves through great effort that what they are seeing isn't real, the spell will end prematurely, otherwise it wears off after the duration.

Polymorph: (60 ft, concentration, up to 1 hour)
This spell transforms Taako or a person that he can see into a different, similarly-sized form. If the person already has shape-changing powers, it will have no effect. The creature is limited in the actions it can perform by the nature of its new form, it's speech capacity is limited, and it can't cast spells or take any other action that requires hands or speech. The target’s gear melds into the new form. The creature can’t activate, use, wield, or otherwise benefit from any of its equipment. The transformation lasts for the duration, but he cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends.

Stoneskin: (touch only, concentration, up to 1 hour)
This spell turns the flesh of a willing person, including himself, that he can touch as hard as stone, making them resistant to damage. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends.

Wall Of Fire: (120 ft, up to 1 minute)
The spell creates a wall of fire on a solid surface within range. Taako can make the wall up to 60 feet long, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick, or a ringed wall up to 20 feet in diameter, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick. The wall is opaque and lasts for the duration. When the wall appears, each creature within its area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes a moderate amount fire damage, or half as much damage on a successful save. One side of the wall, selected by Taako when the spell is cast, deals a moderate amount of fire damage to each creature that ends its turn within 10 feet of that side or inside the wall. A creature takes the same damage when it enters the wall for the first time on a turn or ends its turn there. The other side of the wall deals no damage. When casted at higher levels, it deals more and more damage.

FIFTH LEVEL SPELLS (two slots)


Animate Objects: (120 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Inanimate objects come to life at Taako's command. He can choose up to ten objects to animate for the duration, controlling them all together or independently. For every higher level cast above 5th, Taako can control two additional objects.

Bigby's Hand: (120 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako creates a large hand of shimmering, translucent force that moves at his command, mimicking the movements of his own hand. The hand can be used to hit, push, grasp, or block other objects and individuals. The spell can be ended if the hand is damaged significantly.

Cloudkill: (120 ft, concentration, up to 10 minutes)
He creates a cloud of poisonous, yellow-green fog that heavily obscures the area for the duration. Anyone caught inside the fog is poisoned, causing immediate, short term damage that is mildly incapacitating, even if they hold their breath or don’t need to breathe. The fog moves 10 feet away from him at the start of each of your turns (every 6 seconds), rolling along the surface of the ground. The vapors, being heavier than air, sink to the lowest level of the land, even pouring down openings. It can be cleared by a strong wind. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. If the spell is cast at a higher level, the damage is increased a small amount per higher level cast.

Cone of Cold: (60 ft cone from self)
A blast of cold air erupts from Taako's hands. Anyone hit by it suffers superficial frostbite. If the spell kills someone or something, it becomes a frozen statue that can be thawed naturally, or shattered into pieces. If the spell is cast at a higher level, the damage is increased a small amount per higher level cast.

Dominate Person: (60 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Taako charms a person that he can see. While they are charmed, Taako has a telepathic link to them he can use to issue commands, which it will do its best to obey as quickly and efficiently as it would if it were its own thought. If a task is not completed before the end of the duration, the target will not have to complete it and the spell will end. Each time the target takes damage, it has a higher chance of breaking the spell. When he casts this spell using a 6th-level spell slot, the duration is concentration, up to 10 minutes.

Immolation: (90 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
Flames wreathe one creature Taako can see within range. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw. It takes a moderately high amount of fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. On a failed save, the target also burns for the spell’s duration. The burning target sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. At the end of each of its turns, the target repeats the saving throw; it takes a decent amount of fire damage on a failed save, and the spell ends on a successful one. These magical flames can’t be extinguished through nonmagical means. Additionally, if damage from this spell kills a target, the target is turned to ash.

Mislead: (self only, concentration, up to 1 hour)
Taako become invisible at the same time that an illusory double of him appears where he was standing. He can move his illusory and make it gesture, speak, and behave however he would like, but while controlling his double, cannot move, hear, see, gesture, or speak himself, having to switch between the two. He can see through its eyes and hear through its ears as if he were located where it is. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends. The spell breaks if Taako attacks or casts a spell from his real body.

Planar Binding: (Requires a gemstone the spell consumes, 60 ft, takes 1 hour to cast and lasts up to 24 hours)
With this spell, Taako can attempt to bind a celestial, elemental, fey, or fiend to his service. The creature must be within range for the entire casting of the spell and lasts for the duration. A bound creature must follow your instructions to the best of its ability, though it can twist words to achieve its own objectives. If cast at a higher level, the duration increases to 10 days with a 6th-level slot.

Wall of Force: (120 ft, concentration, up to 10 minutes)
An invisible wall of force springs appears in a shape and direction he chooses, either free floating or resting on a solid surface. He can form it into a hemispherical dome or a sphere, shape a flat, load bearing surface with it. If the wall cuts through a person. when it appears, the person is pushed to one side of the wall of Taako's choice. Nothing can pass through the wall, and it is immune to damage. He cannot cast any other spells while this spell is active, or its effect ends.

SIXTH LEVEL SPELLS (one slot)


Disintegrate: (60 ft)
A thin green ray springs from Taako's finger to target an object or living being. If hit, the target takes a truly massive amount of damage, capable of completely disintegrating objects up ten feet by ten feet in size to a pile of fine, gray dust, or dealing a massive amount of damage, leaving a person in need of immediate medical attention or at risk of death. Disintegrate cannot destroy magical items, and cannot destroy anything bigger than a 10x10 cube.

Drawmij's Instant Summons: (Requires a sapphire, touch)
Taako can touch a small object (under 10 lbs and less than 6 ft) and inscribe the name of the item on a sapphire (which the spell destroys). At any time thereafter, anyone can speak the item’s name and crush the sapphire, which causes the item to instantly appear in their hand regardless of physical or
planar distances. If another creature is holding or carrying the item, crushing the sapphire will only tell you who has it and where they are. This magic can be dispelled through other magical means.

Flesh to Stone: (60 ft, concentration, up to 1 minute)
This spell turns an organic person (i.e. made of flesh) that Taako can see into solid stone. It takes a full minute to cast, and the person can fight against the spell for that duration. If the stone is physically broken while petrified, the person suffers from similar deformities when they revert to their original state. If Taako casts another spell within the minute, the effects will immediately dissipate. If he does not, the effect will last for up to an hour or until it's removed, by Taako or by other magical means.

Magic Jar: (self only, until dispelled)
Taako's body falls into a catatonic state as his soul leaves it and enters a container. While his soul inhabits the container, all he can do is project his soul up to 100 feet out of the container, either returning to his body or attempting to possess someone else. If he succeeds, his soul inhabits the other body, and the other humanoid's soul becomes trapped in the jar. If he fails, he cannot attempt it again on the same person for 24 hours. If the container is destroyed or the spell ends, his soul immediately returns to his body, unless it is more than 100 feet away from him or dead (which causes an instant death). The same goes for the other creature's soul. The spell ends if the container is destroyed or Taako's soul returns to his body.

True Seeing: (touch, up to an hour)
This spell gives the any willing being that Taako can touch, including himself, the ability to see things as they actually are. For the duration, the individual has truesight, and can see through darkness, illusions, hallucinations, and other effects impacting vision. If the person requires corrective lenses and is not wearing them, their truesight will be as blurry as their normal vision, but the full range of the truesight is 120 feet.

EIGHTH LEVEL SPELLS (one slot)


Sunburst: (150 feet)
Taako causes brilliant sunlight to flash in a 60-foot radius centered on a point he chooses within range. Each creature in that light must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes a high amount of radiant damage and is blinded for 1 minute. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage and isn’t blinded by this spell. Undead and oozes have disadvantage on this saving throw. A creature blinded by this spell makes another Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns; on a successful save, it is no longer blinded. Additionally, this spell dispels any darkness in its area that was created by magic.

Independent of these spell slots, Taako also has access to certain traits through his race, which are:

- Being an elf, Taako natively has darkvision, extra protection against being charmed, and cannot be put to sleep by magical means.
- He doesn't need to sleep (instead going into a trancelike state for 4 hours a day), but he sure does enjoy it. If he is gonna sleep instead of trancing for his energy back, he needs to sleep as much as a normal human.
